The Tumor In The Dark

In 2006 I underwent a brain surgery to remove a benign tumor that had formed. Prior to the surgery, I had begun to experience horrifying headaches and fractal vision, and what’s more lived a very thin barrier between my dream life and waking life, as I frequently slipped in between states of consciousness, finding each to be a valuable reality. My work at this time reflects dreamscapes I occupied, my discovery of the tumor, which was remarkably preceded by making images of brains, and allegorical representations of my journey to the other side during the surgery itself.   All of this occurred as I was a senior in college, and was awarded the Irwin Scholarship and a show at the Sesnon Gallery, UCSC, pictured here.
